New Part Of Rome Colosseum Now Open To The Public
Millions have visited Rome's Colosseum throughout the years. However, not many have been able to see the top floors. Recently the fourth and fifth levels of the Colosseum which are the upper levels, have been opened to the public and they can see it by following certain restrictions.
The Colosseum Of The Past
Those who visited the amphitheatre to watch events were given the cheap seats in the upper levels if they were of lower class. The seats on the upper levels didn't provide them with as great view of the action down below. Through the years they deteriorated so even though other parts of the Colosseum were accessible for visitors, the fourth and fifth were off limits because they just weren't safe. They have now undergone a massive restoration project. What this means is that tourists can see an amazing view of the surrounding area that others haven't been able to see before. For the first time in 40 years, these upper levels are now open to the public. These levels are over 131 feet off of the ground. They also have a connecting gallery that visitors can explore as well, where they can see traces of six different Roman toilets. In order to access these levels, visitors will have to reserve a guided tour for about $10.50.
About The Restorations
The restorations cost millions of dollars. They included providing reinforcements to strengthen the facades and replaces gates and barriers. All of this is to keep visitors safe. In the future there will be a visitor centre where they can learn a little bit more about the history of the Colosseum. One of the next areas for renovation will be the underground vaults. They used to hold wild animals as well as prisoners. They were held there while waiting for their execution. Some speculate that with all of these renovations that one day the Colosseum will hold events again like they did in the past. This could include concerts or even re-enactments of Ancient Roman matches. There's no word yet on whether or not this will happen and we will most likely have to wait and see how all of the renovations go so that it can be determined whether or not the seating and stadium can be made safe enough to actually hold these events. For now, visitors will have to just picture these types of events as they are touring the Colosseum.
