Should I Take A Vaporetto or Water Taxi in Venice

May 03, 2017

If you are staying on the island of Venice, one of the things you'll have to decide on is whether to take a Water Taxi or Vaporetto upon landing... Keep in mind that regardless of which one you choose, you'll still need to pull your luggage for about 10 minutes to the pier.

What's the difference between a Vaporetto & Water Taxi?

  • Vaporettos are like the city busses of Venice, only they look like ferries. They cost around $20 per person one way and there are many vaporettos stops around the island. Taking a Vaporetto in Venice, is like taking a bus transfer in Disney in the sense that you'll have to wait till the bus arrives at your stop... Furthermore, since the Vaporetto is municiple transportation, you might have to stand as they can be crowded.

  • Taking a Water Taxi on the other hand is the most luxurious way to enter the city. Since only a party of four or fewer are in the boat, it is private service and takes you directly to your hotel without any stops. The lagoon can be rough, with the water taxi slapping the wakes of other boats. Once you enter the Grand Canal, the ride slows way down and you can marvel at the surroundings. As you pull up to the dock of your hotel, the doorman appreciates that you paid a premium to arrive in style and treats you like the VIP you are. Water taxis cost 95 Euros from the airport, about $135 USD, per boat.

When traveling to Venice, you can either get there as part of a vacation to Venice or on a guided vacation of Italy. On a 2018 guided Italy vacation, you can rest assured that your water transfer will be included in the price. Whether you're on a Globus Italy Vacation, Insight Italy Vacation, or Trafalgar Italy Vacation, the Water Taxi will definitely be included with your Italy travel package.
