Bologna Is An Old City With Many Nicknames
Bologna is an old city with many nicknames, and among the ones bestowed on Bologna there are three that make the most sense and they are La Dotta, La Rossa and La
Grassa... La Dotta refers to "The Educated" or Education due having the oldest university in all of Europe... La Rossa, meaning red, refers to the city's politics and the color of its buildings... La Grassa, meaning fat, refers to the fact that
Emilia Romagna is considered to be the food capital of Italy. In Bologna, you'll be able to experience the
ancient markets and food shops with your guide tasting local products
such as fresh pasta, cheeses, hams, salamis etc...
Pre-dating the
Sorbonne in Paris and Oxford in England, Bologna has the oldest
university in Europe and has the sort of youthful vibrancy that
universities bring to a city. During the Middle Ages, noblemen vied with
each other to build the tallest towers, both for defense and to show
off. Florence has lost most of its towers but in Bologna, many have
survived, including one with a decided lean to it and it is here that
you learn that Pisa is by no means unique. In fact, the tower that leans the most out of any other in Bologna & Pisa itself (Garisenda Tower) is actually older than the one in Pisa!
Bologna's most prominent and central Piazza is the "Piazza Maggiore", which has been at the heart of Bologna for 2500 years and dominating one side of the square is the Basilica of San Petronio, one of the finest examples of Italian Gothic architecture. On the other side of the square is the Palace of the Podesta, What we would call today a city hall but in the Middles Ages, very much the seat of government.
Yet there is still more to Bologna than meets the eye including museums, restaurants and craft beer pubs... Oh and if you're hip, health and environmentally conscience, there is a place for you at LA SERRE DEI GIARDINI MARGHERITA! It is considered the largest green space in the city and what's more interesting is that the area itself was made up of greenhouses that were abandoned and later transformed. One of the abandoned greenhouses were repurposed into a startup accelerator or incubator, while others were transformed into vegetarian/vegan restaurants. It is the perfect place for a digital nomad!
