Spread out across seven famous hills, Rome (known as The Eternal City) was founded in 753 BC by Romulus, the city's first king. For centuries, Rome has had an influence on art, music, and architecture; it's no wonder the city has its own gravitational pull on millions of tourists each year! Ever since the 2000 Jubilee when Rome was made over to improve infrastructure for the new millennia, it has attracted tens of millions of tourists, artists, and thinkers!

As the adage goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day", so don't expect to see all of Rome in a day neither. Even though anyone who has ever travelled to Rome has their personal Top 5 Best Roman Piazzas, there are over 25 piazzas in Rome alone! Aside from the piazzas, there is lots to see when traveling to Rome... For instance, there's the Colosseum, Vatican City, Vatican Museums, The Sistine Chapel, and the Uffizi Gallery... These particular sights require an entrance fee, which attracts long lines; that said, the importance of traveling with a tour operator is highlighted, especially during these times. A luxury tour operator will not only have your entrance fee covered, the majority of your sightseeing will be spent in private, rather than in the company of hordes of tourists.

You can travel to Rome by way of plane or by ship; however, if you have yet to experience Rome and your cruise doesn't begin or end in Rome, you're cheating yourself out of an unbelievable experience. You see, Rome itself is land locked; therefore, if Rome is on your cruise itinerary, the ship will have to dock into Civitavecchia Port, which is located 50 miles northwest of Rome. This may not seem like a big deal, but the shuttle ride can take upwards of three hours depending on traffic, and that's each way. If you arrive at 8am (Italy Time), don't expect to arrive before 10am. Oh, and you'll need to be back on the ship by 6pm as the ship leaves at 8pm. This leaves only 5 to 5.5 hours max to tour the city.
