Don't miss the magnificent cities of Italy.  The archetype of Western civilization, Rome is a testament to human achievement, its artistic and archaeological treasures are too numerous to list.  Venice was an empire in its own right, and the art and architecture of Florence rival that of any city in the world.  

Verdant hills lined with olive trees and grape vines could be the quintessential Italian scene.  Sip a fine Chianti at a Tuscan vineyard and dine on fresh pasta made by the proprietor's grandmother. Here are a few quick tips when visiting Italy:

Gelato:  Not all Italian ice cream is created the same.  Italy certifies certain shops as Gelaterie Artigianale, based on the use of fresh, all natural ingredients.  In Rome, head over to San Crispino near the Trevi Fountain for a scoop of crema with honey.  The tiny Gelateria Alaska in Venice is known as much for its friendly owner, as for its delightful flavors such as ginger and watermelon.  If you make it to the quaint town of San Gimignano, visit the Master Gelato Maker of Pluripremiata Gelateria in Piazza della Cisterna.  They have been awarded best Ice Cream in the World several years running.  There are very unusual gelato flavors that you can only taste here, such as the Raspberry and Rosemary, Blackberries and Lavender, Ricotta and bilberries or Gargonzola and walnuts.

Shopping:  Italy is a paradise for shoppers, so don't forget to look for fantastic boutiques among the galleries, fountains and museums of art-filled Florence.  Street vendors have wonderful hand made leather products including purses, shoes and clothing.

Pasta:  No trip to Italy is complete without a plate of fresh pasta in an elegant sidewalk cafe.  While on the island of Capri, be sure to sample some orecchiette with zucchini flowers and shrimp at Ristorante Sollievo-D'Amore on Via Fourlovado.
