The Best of Capri Italy

The Best of Capri Italy

January 15, 2021

If you're intention is to discover the best of Capri Italy, then you (my friend) are in the right place! I had the privilege of staying three nights at the Capri Palace, where we were placed in one of the junior suites celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow stayed in for a week! We're talking 1400 Euros a night I didn't have to pay for on account of the front desk accidentally giving up my run-of-house room to someone else! I cannot tell you how appreciative I was about that accident; the view itself was worth every dollar to anyone able to shell out the 1400 euros a night.

From the moment you walk out the front door, the Isle of Capri opens itself up to you like the Oleander that grows throughout the island... But, let's start at the very beginning upon leaving Naples on a Hydrofoil on your way to Capri. First of all there's one island with three towns (Capri, Anacapri and Marina Grande) and the difference in location between these three towns are:

  • Marina Grande is located at the base of the island where the hydrofoil pulls up to drop everyone off...
  • Capri is located around the middle part of the island where all the high-end boutique shops and Capri Palace is located , and...
  • Anacapri is located at the very top of the island where it's less crowded, very picturesque and more peaceful.

The great part of the island is that it is only ten square kilometers or six square miles with a population of 16,000 locals; however, during its peak tourism month of August, there could be as many as 20,000 arriving visitors! That's crazy, but true!

Now, from the moment you begin to sail up to the Isle of Capri, you see what used to be just a spot from the port of Naples to a monolith of rock rising from the sea welcoming you with open arms and smiles from local drivers waiting to usher you up the mountain. Being in the white (normally opened convertible) vehicles taking you up to your hotel is already a totally different experience from Rome, Florence and even the Amalfi Coast. The Isle of Capri is simple elegance with a small town-relaxed charm unlike any other destination on the the boot.

Wine shops, butchers, bakeries, espresso and crepe shops are what you will mostly find throughout every winding turn... Nutella, which is sold at mostly every grocery store I shop at here at home is a major staple in Italy, especially in Capri where you can have it lathered inside a Crepe served with powdered sugar & fresh strawberries on top! The wine shops sell an assortment of locally bottled wine, which you can purchase and take back to your hotel with locally cased and sold sausages at butcher shops. At the end of one of our walks throughout Capri, my wife and I stopped and picked up some wine and sausage we brought back to our suite at the Capri Palace where we sat and enjoyed on our huge balcony while the sun set on the ocean.

When most travelers fly to Rome for a week, you can always make money on betting they'll take a day trip through the Amalfi Coast or to Florence, and the same could be said about those staying in Venice visiting Verona... However, for travelers flying into Naples and staying on the Isle of Capri, there's really no other place we'd like stay or for that matter visit because everything we would ever need or want could be found within ten square kilometers.
